World Down Syndrome Day 2020 – Day 11

World Down Syndrome Day 2020 – Day 11

Nathanael was born in New Delhi, India in 2010. Due to the social stigma attached to anyone born with Down syndrome, a negative outlook within the society and lack of any infrastructure or support system in India, we knew he would not get a fair chance to live to his full potential. As parents, our main objective was to provide a positive environment and give him a fair opportunity so he can live an independent life when he grows up. After much research and consultation, his mum Nimi, being a teacher by profession, enrolled in a Master of Education, specialising in Special Education at Edith Cowan University. Her intention was to learn how to teach children with disabilities so we could teach our son the way he learns best. With that, we came to Australia in 2013 when he was just two years old.

Jacob is the eldest of my three children and he has two younger cousins that are very close. Jacob has always been treated equally at home and for the most part at school. He goes to a mainstream school and is on a modified plan with a support worker. As a family, we have been involved with horses for many years, competing across most equestrian disciplines. When Jacob was born, we got his first pony and he has ridden all his life. We believe this has helped his develop core strength, balance and dexterity.

He loves going to the local games of footy to support Mirboo North and being a part of the match-day experience. He leads the club out on the ground and joins in with the club song when they have a win. He has played the occasional game for Mirboo North in the fourths since 2016 and he sometimes trains with the boys. Alec is also part of All Abilities Sports – Latrobe Valley and he does football and cricket.

The Down Syndrome Advisory Network is a network of people with Down syndrome from across Australia who provide input into the work of Down Syndrome Australia.
