About the Capacity Building for Dietitians in Disability (CBBD) project
- The Capacity Building for Dietitians in Disability (CBDD) project is an NDIS funded project to build the capacity of dietitians to meet the needs of people with disabilities and improve access to dietitian services.
- Dietitians Australia (DA) is the lead organisation.
- The Australian Federation of Disability Organisations (AFDO) is the partner organisation.
Background
- Poor recognition of the food, fluid, and nutrition care needs of people with disability has resulted in adverse health outcomes for many people with disability in Australia.
- Poor access to dietitian services and limited workforce capacity are barriers to nutrition care for people with disability, in both mainstream health and NDIS settings.
About the Advisory Group
Members of the CBDD Advisory Group will include:
- Two people with disability
- One dietitian who is an NDIS provider
- One dietitian who works in the mainstream health setting
- One person from AFDO
- DA Centre for Advanced Learning Manager
- DA Project Manager (other DA personnel may attend Advisory Group meetings to provide support, as required).
The Advisory Group will run from July 2020 to 1st February 2023.
- Meetings will be held via Zoom video conferencing platform.
- It is anticipated that there will be 7 teleconferences over the course of the project.
- Each teleconference meeting will be held for a maximum of two hours, unless advised otherwise.
Role and function of the Advisory Group
The role of persons with disability on the Advisory Group will be to:
- Provide the perspective of a person with lived experience of disability
- Inform the development of an educational program to enhance dietitians’ knowledge and capacity to meet the needs of people with disability
- Build the capacity of dietitians to diagnose and treat conditions for people with disability
- Improve dietitians understanding of NDIS access requirements
- Increase dietitians understanding of needs for people with disability when interacting with services
- Educate health professionals (dietitians) about disability
